Not being familiar with dovecotes ourselves, we did a little research and we found out they are structures to house pigeons or doves which, historically, served as significant status symbols for the nobility. Doves and pigeons were kept by wealthy, elite families for food as well as for their feathers. Until the 17th century, the right to keep doves was a privilege enjoyed by the aristocratic elite.
